Baby Dumbo Octopus Caught on Camera for the First Time

Scientists have released the first footage showing the hatching of a rare deep-sea octopus, which has been dubbed the Dumbo octopus for its long ear-like fins.

This video of the sea creature was captured by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution ecologist Tim Shank, whose team found an octopus egg and witnessed it hatch while on an expedition in the Northwest Atlantic on August 31, 2005. Shank said the juvenile octopus swam and surveyed its surrounding like an adult within 10 minutes of hatching, which provided insights into its early life cycle.

This video was released along with a research paper published in the Current Biology journal on February 19.

The video, shared by Australian woman Lauren Jubb, shows the sea creature weaving in and out of plastic bags, wrappers and other pieces of debris in search of food.

“I have never been so horrified and heartbroken as I was when I saw the amount of plastic and rubbish in the bay,” Jubb wrote alongside the video. “These beautiful creatures swimming amongst the mess that we as humans have created. The mantas had plastic bags around their mouths and on their bodies whilst swimming around the rubbish in search for food.”

Dog adopts Capuchin monkey

This Capuchin monkey was removed from its natural habitat just weeks after birth.

This dog recently lost its five pups.

Residents of the neighborhood gave the monkey to this dog to nurse.

And the dog nursed it.

Now, months later, the two are inseparable.

But local residents called police because the monkey would become aggressive when people approached.

Police have taken custody of the animals in efforts to separate them and send the monkey back into the wild.

But some animal experts have expressed concern about the animals being separated, as the monkey could be rejected by its species in the wild.

French zoo welcomes baby rhino one year after poaching incident

France's Thoiry Zoo proudly showed their baby rhinoceros on Feb. 14, a welcome addition to the wildlife park one year after their four-year-old rhino was slaughtered by poachers.

The three-year-old male named Unesco arrived at the zoo, situated near Paris, on January 25.

Unesco, a wild white rhino, came from the Peaugres Safari in southern France, who baptised it as such after the nearby Pont d'Arc Cavern was recognised as a UNESCO heritage site.

Unesco's arrival at the zoo came less than a year after a rare white rhinoceros named Vince was killed in March 2017 by poachers who broke into the park. Authorities have not identified the perpetrators and the incident is still under investigation.

Unesco gets along with the park's two other white rhinos, zoo staff said, and security measures have been reinforced since Vince's killing to ensure the safety of more than 800 animals living in the park.

Wild white rhinos are on the brink of extinction, since their horns are often coveted by poachers, with a kilo of rhino horn fetching 51,000 euros ($53,900) on the black market in 2015, according to a statement from the zoo.

Only 20,000 white rhinos currently thrive in the wild, according to conservation group Save the Rhino.

Thoiry Zoo will re-open on Feb. 17 after its scheduled winter closure.

Dozens of dolphins found stranded in Baja California Sur state

Mexican authorities say dozens of dolphins have been found stranded on a rocky beach along the coast of Baja California Sur state.

The federal environmental protection agency reports that 54 of the marine mammals came onshore in the area of La Paz Bay. Workers attended to the dolphins and saved 33 of them, but 21 died.

The agency said Tuesday in a statement that they were short-beaked common dolphins. Marine experts believe an attack by a group of bottlenose dolphins provoked the mass beaching.

Dozens of dolphins washed up on the rocks and lined up in the sand, overseen by white-coated personnel who measured them and collected information.

STORY: Zookeepers treated a female giraffe trio to an all-girl Valentine's Day treat at ZSL London Zoo on Friday (February 9).

Ellish and her girlfriends, Margaret and Mollie, enjoyed flowers presented in a heart-shaped wreath, ahead of February 14.

The zoo's giraffe keeper, Louise Jackobson said that like all ladies, the giraffes "love to receive a bunch of flowers", especially on such an event.

But the flowers did not last long, according Jackobson: "Led by queen bee Ellish, the single ladies used their dexterous elongated tongues to tug the pretty petals off the heart-shaped wreath in a matter of moments -- just like when they tug vegetation and flowers off the very tops of trees to eat."

Daytona Beach Police Officer Adopts 'Frozen Puppy' Rescued From River

2018-02-10    0 views
A pitbull puppy rescued by animal control officers from under a bridge in Daytona Beach, Florida, amid freezing temperatures on January 18, was adopted by Daytona Beach Police Officer Kera Cantrell on February 5.

The tiny canine, named River, was found under Seabreeze Bridge in frigid Halifax River waters, police said. A video showing the moments after the rescue was shared by the police department on February 8. It shows animal control officers John Pearson and James Lee holding the puppy in their arms inside their vehicle, trying to warm it up. The puppy is seen shaking, and heard making whimpering noises.

Police said the puppy was nursed back to health at the Halifax Humane Society, and was later adopted by Officer Kera Cantrell. “Officer Cantrell is now River’s new mom and these are two happy girls!” the police department wrote on Facebook.

"For the last couple of weeks we've been telling you about River the Frozen Puppy. As you know her story ended happily; she is safe and sound and very loved in the home of one of our police officers. But we wanted to share the moment after River was found and then rescued by our wonderful animal control officers John Pearson and James Lee. And we really want to thank the person, whoever you are, who called and let DBPD know that River had been left to die under the Seabreeze Bridge in mid-January when the temperature had fallen to below freezing."

"Remember the beautiful puppy rescued by Daytona Beach's excellent animal control officers under the Seabreeze Bridge during frigid temps? Here she is again. Yes, she is a SHE and her name is River! River has two holds on her for adoption and she is on her way to perfect health, thanks to officers James Lee (in the first photo) and John Pearson. We love River!"

"UPDATE ON RIVER THE FROZEN PUPPY: This is the kind of update we love at DBPD. Of course you remember River, the pit bull puppy rescued by DBPD's animal control officers several days ago from the frigid waters of the Halifax River.
This beautiful, spunky puppy was nursed back to health at Halifax Humane Society. One DBPD officer kept visiting River while she recovered. That officer, District One's Kera Cantrell, fell in love with this little canine and the feeling was mutual!
Officer Cantrell is now River's new Mom and these are two happy girls!"
