How, Voza Rivers, a steward of African American theater, introduced South African theater to Harlem

clip1 - 0:19
I've been operating in Harlem for 7 decades.

[title]
Voza Rivers is a leading producer and documentary filmmaker. He got his start in Harlem, and to this day has been helping bolster the neighborhood through the arts.

Clip 2 - 6:53
What changed my life and what changed my community was the young man from South Africa who was a student with a person named Stephen Biko.

[TITLE]
Stephen Biko was an anti-apartheid activist who was killed in police detention.

8:00
That meeting with Duma changed my life because he introduced me to South African theater. In the 20 years with Roger I had laid and been a part of the foundation of African American theater, learning all the players and writers and scripts about black culture in the United States. Duma opened me up to another world. (cut)

8:37
I saw two actors who were phenomenal, they were down in the Village. I went to see the play with my group and I had never seen acting like that before. (cut)
8:52
The two actors said, 'You know what? We've been here 6 months, we won all these awards, and we haven't seen any black people. What's happening?'
9:09
They said, 'Well, we want to be where our people are. Can you get us into your little theater?' - well, he didn't say little. I said, 'My theater's only 99 seats!' He said, 'Man, in South Africa, we perform for 30 people.' (cut)

clip 3 - 0:19
I brought those 2 actors up to Harlem. They performed. The New York Times came, and the NYT who reviewed them downtown said oh my God, it's like another show.
The actors were possessed, they thought they were in South Africa, they saw so many people of color that the NYT put the article on the front page of the weekend section - From South Africa to Harlem.
And the people from downtown who had already seen it,
some of the heads of the major theaters said, let's go up to see what the difference is
and they came and they saw, and they said ‘Oh my God, this is unbelievable.’
(cut)
1:10
Joseph Papp who ran The Public Theater, Shakespeare in the Park, he saw the play
the people who were running Lincoln Center Theater came
the woman who owned the theater downtown where the actors were originally performing, Lucille tell, she came, and others, through that relationship, people were really interested in what's next.

Russia has violated the agreement. They've been violating it for many years and I don't know why President Obama didn't negotiate or pull out. We're not going to let them violate a nuclear agreement and go out and do weapons, and we're not allowed to. We're the ones that have stayed in the agreement and we've honored the agreement, but Russia has not, unfortunately, honored the agreement, so we're going to terminate the agreement. We're going to pull out.

Sheep replaced the usual traffic in central Madrid on Sunday as shepherds steered hundreds of the animals through the Spanish capital to proclaim their right to use ancient migration routes.

Every year since 1994, sheep farmers have paraded the livestock through the city, an itinerary that once cut through undeveloped countryside, on their way to graze in winter pastures in southern Spain.

Sheep farmers pay a symbolic charge, enshrined in a 1418 agreement with the city council, equivalent to 50 maravedis - medieval copper coins - per 1,000 sheep brought through the central Sol square and Gran Via street.

Justice Department Launches Federal Probe Into Pennsylvania Church Sex-Abuse
Della.sun
2018-10-19    2 views
In Pennsylvania at least six Roman Catholic DIE-O-SEES (dioceses) are under investigation over child sex abuse claims. These cases were apparently covered up by the church for decades.

The statewide probe is believed to be the first of its kind opened by the US Justice Department. And it marks a new climate for the nation, one where the church is facing unprecedented scrutiny.

The DIE-O-SEES (dioceses) that received SUH-PEE-NAS (subpoenas) are based in: Philadelphia, Erie, Harrisburg, Scranton, Pittsburgh, Greensburg and Allentown.

The federal probe is a result of a bombshell grand jury report coming from Pennsylvania a few months ago. It accused over three hundred predator priests across the state for sexual abuse.

The report identified at least one thousand child victims and revealed that Church officials were complicit in a decades-long cover-up.

Some DIE-O-SEES (dioceses) were not surprised with the findings. One from Greensburg said in a statement, quote: “This subpoena is no surprise considering the horrific misconduct detailed in the statewide grand jury report.”

Co-director of Bishop Accountability dot org, Anne Barret-Doyle, said “This is a first. Federal law enforcement has been awfully silent on the Catholic abuse problem, and it's about time.”

Although the investigation gives hope to those affected, there are still major roadblocks.

We have interviewed multiple lawyers dealing with child sex abuse cases. The number one legal barrier that blocks prosecutors from charging someone, is the number of years after a crime is committed. It’s termed as the statute of limitations, and its different in every state.

Since two thousand and two, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests had asked the federal government three times for a nationwide investigation. They had amassed accusations of sexual predation on some fifteen thousand of active and retired Catholic clergymen.

Yet many of the cases mentioned in the recent grand jury report took place around the seventies. That means they were too old to revisit under the criminal law.

The current investigation was first reported by the Associated Press on Wednesday, but so far a department of justice spokeswoman told us that they cannot confirm, deny or comment on the existence or non-existence of such a probe.

In total, about thirteen states have announced their own investigations into child sex abuse allegations within the Roman Catholic church.

Stoned Driver Crash Risk Grows as Legal Pot Spreads in the U.S.

Car accidents are happening more frequently in
states that have fully legalized marijuana.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
announced the finding in two new studies.

The group compared car crash insurance claims in
four states that legalized pot to nearby states.

It found the frequency of the claims rose about
six percent higher than in states where pot is illegal.

In another study, it found a five percent increase
in the rate of crashes in states that legalized pot.

David Harkey, president of the Insurance Institute,
said the findings were concerning.

“We’re seeing a consistently higher crash risk in
those states that have legalized marijuana,” he said.

U.S. pastor Andrew Brunson arrived at his home in Turkey's Izmir on Friday (October 12) according to a Reuters cameraman, after leaving a court that earlier ruled he be released.

The court sentenced Brunson - whose case has been at the centre of a row between Washington and Ankara - to three years and 1-1/2 months in prison on terrorism charges, but said he would not serve any further jail time.

Dressed in a black suit, white shirt and red tie, the North Carolina native wept as the decision was announced, witnesses said. Before the judge's ruling he had told the court: "I am an innocent man. I love Jesus, I love Turkey."

The pastor, who has lived in Turkey for more than 20 years, was put in prison two years ago and has been under house arrest since July.

U.S. pastor Andrew Brunson will likely return to the United States after a court in Turkey ruled on Friday (October 12) that he should be released, Brunson's lawyer said.

Asked whether Brunson would go to the United States, Ismail Cem Halavurt said: "He will probably leave."

The U.S. military has a plan to fly Brunson back to America on a military aircraft, officials told Reuters.

One of the officials said that Brunson could return to the United States as soon as Friday. A Pentagon spokeswoman told Reuters that the expected plan involved flying Brunson through Germany on the way back to America but did not specify timing.

A Turkish court ruled on Friday that the American evangelical Christian pastor at the centre of a row between Ankara and Washington could go free, a move that could be the first step towards mending ties between the NATO allies.

President Donald Trump says he's "open-minded" about stop-and-frisk policing.

He made the comment as he met with rapper and producer Kanye West at the White House.

Trump earlier this week called on Chicago to adopt the strategy, in which large numbers of people are temporarily detained, questioned and sometimes searched for drugs and weapons.

Trump had said that "stop-and-frisk works."

But West, who's from Chicago, tells Trump that this strategy is detrimental. Here's what West said: stop-and-frisk does not help relationships in the city.

Trump says he'd been willing to "look at it," and says, "They have to do something."

Stop-and-frisk was used extensively in New York City until it was deemed unconstitutional because of its impact on minority residents. Chicago reached an agreement with the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois in 2015 to curb the practice.

West also credits Trump with stopping a potential war with North Korea and is encouraging Trump to swap his usual Air Force One jet for a hydrogen-powered plane.

In a nearly 10-minute long speech in the Oval Office, West says he was pressured not to wear his red "Make America Great Again." West also says that many people believe that if someone's black, then that person has to be a Democrat.

The White House had said that Trump and West would discuss a range of issues, including manufacturing, prison reform, preventing gang violence and reducing violence in Chicago, which is where West grew up.

Melania Trump- I'm 'the most bullied person'

First lady Melania Trump says she could be "the most bullied person" in the world, judging by "what people are saying about me."

She made the remark during a television interview in which she promoted her Be Best initiatives, which take on online bullying. Critics have pointed out that her husband, President Donald Trump, routinely mocks people for their looks and for what he says is a lack of talent or intelligence.

"I could say I'm the most bullied person in the world," Mrs. Trump said in the interview segment that aired Thursday on "Good Morning America."

Mrs. Trump said her Be Best campaign is focusing on social media and online behavior in part because of "what people are saying about me."

"We need to educate the children of social emotional behavior so when they grow up ... they know how to deal with those issues," she said.

The first lady also said there are people in the White House whom she and the president can't trust. She didn't name names but said she let her husband know about them.

"Well," she said, "some people, they don't work there anymore."

Asked if some untrustworthy people still work in the White House, she said, "Yes."

The Trump administration has dealt with an anonymous senior official's newspaper op-ed column critical of the Republican president and with numerous staff departures. This week, U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley announced she's leaving at the end of the year.

Archaeologists uncover 2,000 yr-old inscription of the word Jerusalem in Hebrew

Israeli archaeologists unveiled on Tuesday a 2,000-year-old inscription believed to be the first complete Hebrew spelling of the word Jerusalem as known in its current form - Yerushalayim.

The stone was unveiled at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and will go on display to the public on Wednesday.

It was discovered last year on the outskirts of Jerusalem during excavations that uncovered a Roman structure.

Experts say it is the only stone inscription from the Second Temple period that has the entire spelling.

The only other known instance is an inscription on a coin dating back to the end of the Second Temple period.

The inscription on the stone in Aramaic, using Hebrew letters, reads: "Hanania, son of Dudolos from Jerusalem".

David Mevorah, Israel Museum's curator of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine archaeology said the purpose of the building upon which the inscription was written is unknown.

But, he said, the find is important as it shows how the city's inhabitants referred to Jerusalem at the time.

"It is the first time we find an inscription mentioning Jerusalem in the way we pronounce it today, Yerushalaim," Mevorah said.

He said it is likely Hanania was an artist-potter who took up the name from Greek mythology.

Two other finds will be exhibited alongside the newly-found inscription: a Greek mosaic from the 6th century and a coffin of the son of a high priest with Hebrew writing.

Trump Administration Reviewing Contracts With Fetal-Tissue Providers

lHello and welcome to Epoch Times News. I’m your host Angela Anderson and today we will be talking about Trump Administration Reviewing Contracts With Fetal-Tissue Providers

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) says it’s reviewing contracts with fetal tissue providers after dropping a contract it had with a California-based provider earlier this week because of sourcing issues.

On Sept. 24, HHS announced the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) canceled a contract with Advanced Bioscience Resources, In c., located in Alameda, California, because it was “not sufficiently assured that the contract included the appropriate protections applicable to fetal tissue research or met all other procurement requirements.”

The nearly $16,000 contract, awarded in July, was used to “develop testing protocols,” by injecting the tissue into lab mice, according to HHS.

The agency also said it would review all other acquisitions of fetal tissue to ensure they comply with the law, and would be looking into alternatives for research receiving HHS funding.

“In addition, HHS has initiated a comprehensive review of all research involving fetal tissue to ensure consistency with statutes and regulations governing such research, and to ensure the adequacy of procedures and oversight of this research in light of the serious regulatory, moral, and ethical considerations involved,” the department said in a statement.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) still has contracts this year worth about $103 million for research involving fetal tissue, according to its own database. It’s not clear though how much of that is for the actual purchase of tissue from fetuses.

Earlier this month, 85 House members wrote to FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb addressing the agency’s contract with Advanced Bioscience Resources and urging him to cancel it.

The company was alleged to be upselling the tissue for profit, which is against federal law, the letter says.

It also said the matter was referred to the Department of Justice and the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, neither of which responded to an inquiry about an investigation by the time of publication.

“Unborn children are not commodities to be bought and sold,” the letter reads. “The practice of conducting research using the body parts of children whose lives have been violently ended by abortion is abhorrent. We urge you to cancel this contract immediately.”

While fetal tissue isn’t necessarily gleaned from aborted fetuses, the majority is, putting it inside the debate over the controversial practice of abortion that has people almost equally divided into “pro-life” and “pro-choice” camps.

Those who support using fetal tissue for medical research say that alternatives are limited, and don’t yet provide a complete substitute for the more malleable and adaptable stem cells found in fetuses.

tThose who oppose the practice say it’s unnecessary and unethical, and that selling aborted fetuses creates an industry around them, instead of putting money toward developing alternatives.

The Trump administration has shown that is squarely in the “pro-life” camp when, shortly after coming into office, President Donald Trump reinstated the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits U.S. aid from going to NGOs that perform or advocate for abortion or forced sterilization.

Trump and ice President Mike Pence became the first president and vice president to address the March for Life in Washington this January, and Trump proclaimed Jan. 22 as National Sanctity of Human Life Day.

Shortly before that, HHS announced a new division of Conscience and Religious Freedom within HHS’s Office for Civil Rights to enforce federal laws protecting the right to conscience in health and human services.

“No one should be forced to choose between helping sick people and living by one’s deepest moral or religious convictions, and the new division will help guarantee that victims of unlawful discrimination find justice,” OCR Director Roger Severino said in a statement.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday celebrated the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh at a political rally in Kansas and condemned Democrats for what he called a "shameless campaign of political and personal destruction" against Kavanaugh.

To cheers of supporters in Topeka, Trump said he called Kavanaugh to congratulate him upon his ascendency to the high court.

Kavanaugh was sworn in as a justice on Saturday evening in Washington.

His nomination was marked by allegations of sexual misconduct when he was a high school and college student.

He denied the allegations, but nearly all Senate Democrats voted against his confirmation.

Trump said "radical Democrats" had become "an angry, left-wing mob" and "too dangerous and extreme to govern".

He urged Kansas voters to send Republicans to Congress.

Senate Republicans lconfident on Kavanaugh

Republican leaders are showing increasing confidence in the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa said he now expects the Supreme Court nominee to be confirmed in a Senate roll call on Saturday.

Half a dozen GOP senators gathered to speak to reporters in a Senate briefing room Thursday afternoon.

"What we know for sure is the FBI report did not corroberate any of the allegations against Judge Kavanaugh," said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

"And the second thing we know for sure is there is no way anything we did would satisfy the Democrats," he said.

Republicans who'd already voiced support for Kavanaugh echoed Grassley and McConnell, saying after a briefing that there'd been no corroboration of wrongdoing by Kavanaugh.
