VIVALDI Winter concerto | Nicolas BALDEYROU clarinet ensemble

Nicolas BALDEYROU
Dear friends, I hope you’re well ! Today’s video was really lot of fun to record. You know I love many music styles, and baroque music is one of my favorite, especially with this marvelous boxwood Légende in A that I use to get a period clarinet color and a very smooth response. I chose to play the 1st movement of Vivaldi Winter concerto RV297 from The Four Seasons, written on this poem (we still don’t know who’s the author, maybe Vivaldi himself ?): To tremble from cold in the icy snow, In the harsh breath of a horrid wind, To run, stamping one's feet every moment, Our teeth chattering in the extreme cold. Regardless of the sonnets' authorship, The Four Seasons can be classified as program music, instrumental music intended to evoke something extra-musical, and an art form which Vivaldi was determined to prove sophisticated enough to be taken seriously. As always when you arrange a violin piece, you have to deal with many difficulties, a very high range (boxwood is really helpful for that, the high register is (a little bit) less agressive), double stops, strings extended techniques (pizzicati, ponticello etc), big intervals and fast staccato. So I took a tempo that allows me to play everything in single tonguing, and tried my best to adapt every effect to the clarinet. There are also many Easter eggs in this video, the first to mention the place where you can find a Game of thrones reference win my latest CD ! 😁🥳 Here is today’s setup : the solo part is a boxwood Légende in A (Vandoren BD4 and V12 3,5), then 3 Buffet Festival in A, a Buffet Tosca bass clarinet (Vandoren B40 and V12 3,5), an old Buffet contrabass clarinet from 1935 (Leblanc Mouthpiece, Vandoren reed), and a beautiful 18th century sampled Venetian harpsichord. Hope you'll like it !
