President trump is granting new authority to u-s troops on the u.S. - mexico border. The decision comes as a large group of migrants is arriving at the region. Camila bernal breaks down what's in the new guidelines --reporter pkg-as follows-- Thousands of troops spending the thanksgiving holiday at the us mexico border as a caravan of migrants traveling from central america is approaching Pres. Donald trump/tuesday: they are so proud to be representing our country on the border where if you look at what's happening, mexico, the people from tijuana are saying, wow, these are tough people. And the white house on wednesday issuing new and specific guidelines for how u.S. Troops can assist customs and border patrol agents. These new guidelines - in the form of a memo approved by the president - allow troops to use, quote, "A show or use of force (including lethal force, where necessary)" And allow troops to conduct activities such as, quote, "Crowd control, temporary detention and cursory search" In response to the memo - defense secretary james mattis told reporters that there has been quote 'no call for any lethal force' from the department of homeland security. Earlier this week, dhs secretary kirstjen nielsen laid out the strategy - and rationale - for the military presence - Kirstjen nielsen, homeland security secretary: approximately 8 to 10 thousand migrants amassing along our southern border. The crisis is real, and it is just on the other side of this wall There are just under six thousand u.S. Troops on the border. The president has promised as many as 15 thousand if necessary. The pentagon said tuesday the mission will cost approximately 72 million dollars.
