Restoring antique rusty scale - Restoration project

Odd Tinkering
Odd Tinkering
This week I'll restore an antique letter scale. It is rusty, paint is coming off and the brass is badly oxidated. One of the legs has broken off at some point and someone welded it back on destroying the decorations on the body. I'll try to remake those as well. More detailed explanation bellow: SOME OF MY TOOLS: RUST REMOVER: https://www.mc-51thebestrustremover.com/?ref=YbUD-0E4NKfV CARBIDE DREMEL BIT: https://amzn.to/2PNPUSk DREMEL FLEX SHAFT: https://amzn.to/2DQnAda TINY DIAMOND BIT FOR DREMEL: https://amzn.to/2PQIC0o POWER FILE: https://amzn.to/2URHvPq CHUCK NORRIS’ TOOTHBRUSH: https://amzn.to/2YfXUj2 CORDLESS DRILL: https://amzn.to/2Wois77 BETTER ROTARY TOOL: https://amzn.to/2WF75I6 PRESS FOR ROTARY TOOL: https://amzn.to/2Uiv1Eu 2-AXIS TABLE FOR THE PRESS https://amzn.to/2WPkttl MY FILMING GEAR: MAIN CAMERA: https://amzn.to/2JvtKox MAIN TRIPOD: https://amzn.to/2OlpYgn MICROPHONE: https://amzn.to/2I80iDz VIDEO LIGHTS: https://amzn.to/2FpJDaB MAIN LENS: https://amzn.to/2Fm8yMk CINEMATIC LENS: https://amzn.to/2TmNdHH WIDE ANGLE LENS: https://amzn.to/2U7iJha GOPRO: https://amzn.to/2U3eqU3 --------------------------------------------------------------------- SUBSCRIBE ▶▶▶ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCf_s... --------------------------------------------------------------------- Restoration playlist▶ https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVIxIjRNxFv5VRUXt66VzBxOys1GpmBp4 --------------------------------------------------------------------- I started by using a dremel with flex shaft and carbide bit. I used whatever was handy to punch out the rivets but now I have punch a real set for future projects. It was really important to make sure as little pressure is applied on the enamel as possible. The enamel was in ok condition and breaking it would have ruined the project. I used holes on the table and drilled some holes to a block of wood to allow me to punch the rivets out without harming the enamel. After dissassembly I used MC-51 rust remover on the body. This time I had it in a cold shed for a day (warm rust remover would be much faster). The russt came off beautifully. Then I used paint stripper and wrapped the body in plastic. This makes the paint stripper even more effective. After couple of hours all the paint came off in with just Chuck Norris' toothbrush. For the brass parts I used a solution of salt and vinegar. This only took maybe 30 minutes to work. For painting I used gray primer fro the base coat and then 2K Black spray paint. The manufacturer is Car Rep. It seems to be rether senstitive to temperature. The can needs to be warm for good results. I then used jewelers viseI bought to make hammer new rivets from 2.5mm brass wire. When attaching the rivets I needed to start with a few hard blows. This will lock the rivet in (the whole rivet will become thicker). After this I used only the minimum force to widen the other side on the rivet. I had to be very careful to not have the enamel touch the anvil as I hammered. It would have sucked to ruin the project at this point. I was very careful that the whole weight of the piece was on the rivet I was hammering on. Thanks for watching.
